Dr. Haldun Solmaztürk was retired from the Turkish Army, at the rank of brigadier general after 30 years of active service, in 2005.
He served in various units and headquarters of the Turkish Army in Turkey and abroad. He served two tours in NATO; at SHAPE Operations Division in Belgium and Joint Command South East in Izmir Turkey, and two tours in Cyprus. He either actively participated in or took part in the planning and execution of United Nations, OSCE or NATO/coalition operations in Somalia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Afghanistan, Western Sahara, Hebron (Palestine), Nagorno-Karabagh, Nakhchivan, and also in various CFE inspections in the Russian Federation. He has extensive operational experience in anti-terror and anti-insurgency operations in urban environment and countryside.
He is an active international security and policy analyst, commentator, lecturer. He writes, comments and lectures on Turkish foreign policy, Turkish politics, American foreign policy, Trans-Atlantic relations, democratisation beyond ‘third wave’, political psychology, strategic leadership and military history. He is frequently interviewed by the Turkish and international media.
Prior to joining the 21. Century Turkey Institute, he has been associated, in various capacities, with several think tanks to include, among others, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Washington D.C. (WINEP), the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), London, Center for European Security Studies (CESS), Groningen, the Netherlands, London Metropolitan University, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Turkish Center for International Relations and Strategic Analysis (TURKSAM), Ankara. He has long been associated with the 21. Century Turkey Institute as a lecturer at the School of Politics, Strategy and Leadership, an author and member in the editorial board of Journal of National Security and Military Sciences.
He was Executive Director for the Board of Trustees, Kazakh-Turkish International University in Turkistan, Kazakhstan (2006-2008), Vice-President (Turkey) of the Interallied Federation of Reserve Officers, CIOR (2011-2014). Currently he is Centenary Coordinator and Foreign Affairs Advisor to Gallipoli Association (Gelibolu Derneği) of Turkey and Member of the Executive Committee of the Gallipoli and Dardanelles International (GDI) in London.
Dr. Solmaztürk has B.A. from the Turkish Army Academy, M.A. in Military Science from the Turkish Army College, M.A. in International Relations from Boston University, and PhD in Political Science from Istanbul Bilgi University. His PhD dissertation explores the ‘Role of Civil Society Think-tanks in Democratisation in Turkey’ and deals with judiciary and security sector reforms, legislative and political decision-making processes. 1 Jan 2016
