Seselj Homecoming Promises to Shake Up SerbiaThe homecoming of the ultra-nationalist leader - who is on trial for war crimes in The Hague - will add a new element of drama to the political scene. Even before he landed in Belgrade, the returning leader of the Serbian Radical Party, Vojislav Seselj, told reporters on the plane he planned a bare-knuckle fight with his former allies in the ruling Progressive Party.
“Medical treatment is not my priority but raising the [Radical] Party. I will fight against some of my former political comrades,” Seselj warned.
Hours later, in a speech delivered on the balcony of his party headquarters to several hundred supporters, Seselj said his goal was to overthrow Serbia’s President, Tomislav Nikolic, and the Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vucic.
Seselj’s supporters voiced high hopes of his return. One fan waiting at Belgrade airport, Bora Tomic, told BIRN that he expected his chief “to lead the rebellion against capitalism, globalisation and all the other bad things in this world”.
